Not all waves attain their maximum displacements at the same time. The difference between when they reach their relative maxima is called a phase shift. The dimensions of a phase shift are given in terms of angles. Waves with coinciding maxima are said to have a 0° phase shift. If one wave reaches its maximum when the other reaches its minimum, the waves have a 180° phase shift.
